11/05/2026 – “So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, you really are My disciples. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8: 31-32 / Commentary below.
What It Means To Be A Talmid

Thursday, November 5, 2026
Messiah’s disciples were called talmidim. Talmidim means the learners, the students, or those being taught. Messiah was a Rabbi and like all the great Rabbis throughout Jewish History, He had followers around Him who listened to His every word and observed His every action in order to emulate Him. In the same way, if you call Messiah Lord, then you are one of His talmidim. He is your Rabbi, your Teacher, and you are His talmid, His student, His learning one. Therefore, your life is to be a course from which you’re continually learning from your Rabbi. Messiah wants you to advance, to master yesterday’s lessons so He can teach you a new lesson. Like any good teacher (and He’s the best teacher), He has new lessons to give you every day. Greet each day as His talmid, His disciple, His student. Make it your aim to receive a new gem of life from the Master Teacher. Seek to always hear His voice, receive His revelation, and be instructed by His Spirit. For you have the honor of having Messiah as your Rabbi and the honor of being His talmid.

John Gill commentary from John 8: 31-32: (See Note below)
Verse 31
Then said Jesus to those Jews that believed on him,…. For he knew instantly who they were, and when they believed on him; and therefore he immediately turned himself to them, and thus addressed them;
if ye continue in my word; meaning the Gospel, called his, because he was both the author, and preacher, and sum, and substance of it: and to continue in it, is having cordially received it, to abide by it, and hold it fast, and not to be moved from it, by the temptations of Satan; the cunning of those that lie in wait to deceive; nor by the revilings and persecutions, the frowns and flatteries of men: and when men continue thus steadfast in it, and faithful to it, it is an evidence that it has come with power, and has a place in their hearts, and that they are the true followers of Christ:
then are ye my disciples indeed; there are two sorts of disciples of Christ; some are only nominal, and merely in profession such; and these sometimes draw back from him, discontinue in his word, and go out from among his people; which shows that they never were of them, nor are the true disciples of Jesus; for the genuine disciples of Christ continue in his Gospel, hold fast to him, the head, and remain with his people; which to do to the end, is an evidence, of their being disciples indeed.
Verse 32
And ye shall know the truth,…. Either the truth of the Gospel, the truth as it is in Jesus; meaning, that they should have a larger knowledge of it, while others are ever learning, and never come to the knowledge of the truth; but the spirit of truth should lead them into all truth, and cause them to grow and increase in Gospel light and knowledge; or Jesus himself, who is the way, the truth, and the life; and the sense is, that they should know more of him, of the dignity of his person, of the nature and usefulness of his offices; of the efficacy of his blood, the excellency of his righteousness, and the fulness of his grace, and that for themselves:
and the truth shall make you free; from ignorance and error, and the prejudices of education, under which the whole nation laboured, and from the thraldom (*A – below) of the law.
(*A) – Definition of “thraldom” from the Collaborative International Dictionary of English:
“1. The condition of a thrall; slavery; bondage; state of servitude.
2. The state of being under the control of another person.”

Further Note – Matthew 5: 17-20:
“Don’t assume that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets, I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For I assure you: Until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or one stroke of a letter will pass from the law until all things are accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches people to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven. For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5: 17-20
This section raises further questions so we can delve into commentary here as well. But note here is an excerpt from “The Apologetics Study Bible” from this section:
“Given what Jesus had said of His status with regard to the Lw, keeping and teaching the commandments, must take on different force than strict adherence. The Law is good and remains valid (Romans 3:31); 1 Timothy 1:8). Loving God and neighbor is a fulfillment of the Law (Matthew 7:12: 22: 37-40; Romans 13: 8-10; Galatians 5:14; James 2:8).”
Remember: We let scripture testify to scripture! It comes to fruition through prayer and small group bible study fellowship. Very few do it. Why? Because it is hard tedious work, or at least it is perceived that way. I submit that if one sticks with it, you break through it and it opens up to JOY like never before! By His grace!
Blessings to y’all’s day! Our day is just beginning here as I write this. Always connected through prayer and by His grace!
Your brother in Christ,
Jimmy
