Why The New Covenant Is New

Friday, September 18, 2026
In Hebrew, the New Covenant is called Brit Haddashah – the Covenant of Newness. Why is it called new? Is it because it followed the Old Covenant of Mt. Sinai, or because it was the New Covenant back when it was made? It’s far more than that. If it was for any of those reasons, then, after two thousand years, at best, it would be the not so new covenant. Rather, it’s called the New Covenant because it is the Covenant of Newness. It’s always now and ever new. It’s unable to grow old. You may have accepted the New Covenant years ago. But if it’s not new to you anymore, then you’re dealing with something else. It’s the New Covenant when it fills you with wonder; when you can’t believe it even though you believe it. The New Covenant never gets old, but we often forget all about it. Come back today, like a little child. Come back to your first love: The new love, the new life, and the new wonders waiting for you in the covenant that is unable to get older and only gets newer in His grace.
From Message #1438 – The Brit Haddashah
Scripture: Jeremiah 31:31

Note – Just toggle to verse 31 and hit enter. John Gill wrote a commentary for every verse in the Bible.
Commentary from The Apologetics Study Bible – Next two verses – Jeremiah 31: 32-33 (pending completion e.o.d.):
“This one will; not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt – a covenant they broker even though I had married them — The LORD’s declaration. Instead, this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days” — The LORD’s declaration, “I will place my law within them and write it on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be My people.” Jeremiah 31: 32-33
Apologetics commentary:
“31: 32-33 God said the new covenant will not be lie the old one. This does not imply that the old covenant was inadequate, for the new covenant would involve the same core stipulation of full allegiance to God. Jeremiah used the same summary description for the “new” covenant (“I will be their God, and they will be My people”) that the Lord gave for the “old” covenant (cp. Exodus 6:7). While the Bible speaks of a “new covenant,” it is worth noting that the nuance, in English, between “new” and “renewed” may not be a feature of biblical languages; something that is “renewed” is simply called “new.” What is different with this “new” covenant is that it its law is written on the “hearts” of the people (v. 33). Keeping the covenant will not be through actions in conformity to an external standard but it will arise from the inner motivation of a people bonded to their God. This agrees with Joel 2:28, where the prophet declared that the Spirit of God will dwell in people. The people generally failed to keep the old covenant, so in the. new covenant God will, even more than in the past , take the initiative (31:18; 32:40; Ezekiel 36: 24-27, Ephesians 2: 4-5). Ultimately, He did through the death and resurrection of Jesus (Luke 22:20; 1 Corinthians 11:25).” (*A – below)
(*A) – Just as the Old Testament and the New Testament are not two books but one, so is the old covenant and the new covenant are one. And might I add: Just as the Jews and the Gentiles are not two people, but one in the body of Christ.
Note – Early foreshadowing of the “new covenant”:
The Lord’s declaration to the Devil in the garden: “I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your seed, and her seed. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3:15 (See Romans 16:20; Revelation 12: 9-10)
And likewise:
“…Isaac said, “The fire and wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God Himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” Then the two of them walked on together.” Genesis 22: 7-8
