Nevertheless he would not drink thereof, but poured it out unto the Lord. — 2 Samuel 23:16

What has been like water from the well of Bethlehem to you recently — love, friendship, spiritual blessing? Then at the peril of your soul, you take it to satisfy yourself. If you do, you cannot pour it out before the Lord. You can never sanctify to God that with which you long to satisfy yourself. If you satisfy yourself with a blessing from God, it will corrupt you; you must sacrifice it, pour it out, do with it what common sense says is an absurd waste.

How am I to pour out unto the Lord natural love or spiritual blessing? In one way only — in the determination of my mind. There are certain acts of other people which one could never accept if one did not know God, because it is not within human power to repay them. But immediately I say — “This is too great and worthy for me, it is not meant for a human being at all, I must pour it out unto the Lord”; then these things pour out in rivers of living water all around. Until I do pour these things out before the Lord, they endanger those I love as well as myself because they will turn to lust. We can be lustful in things which are not sordid and vile. Love has to get to its transfiguration point of being poured out unto the Lord.

If you have become bitter and sour, it is because when God gave you a blessing you clutched it for yourself; whereas if you had poured it out unto the Lord, you would have been the sweetest person out of heaven. If you are always taking blessings to yourself and never learn to pour out anything unto the Lord, other people do not get their horizon enlarged through you.

WISDOM FROM OSWALD

Jesus Christ reveals, not an embarrassed God, not a confused God, not a God who stands apart from the problems, but One who stands in the thick of the whole thing with man.  Disciples Indeed, 388 L

Soli Deo Gloria!

I encourage y’all to read the entire section : 2 Samuel – Chapter 23, Verses 13 – 17. Then , let’s take a look at Matthew Henry’s Commentary as follows in its entirety to capture this amazing story of David’s heart for the Lord:

“v. 13, 14. [1] How earnestly David longed for the the water of the well of Bethlehem. It was harvest time; the weather was hot; he was thirsty; perhaps good water was scarce, and therefore he earnestly wished, “O that I could but have one draught of the water of the well of Bethlehem!” With the water of that well he had often refreshed himself when he was a youth. Other water might quench his thirst as well, but he had a fancy for that above any. [2] How bravely his three mighty men, Abishai, Benaiah, and another not named, ventured through the camp of the Philistines, upon the very mouth of danger, and fetched water from the well of Bethlehem, without David’s knowledge, v. 16. How much they valued their prince, and with what pleasure they could run the great hazards and undergo the greatest hardship in his service! And shall not we covet to approve ourselves to our Lord Jesus by a ready compliance with every intimation of his will given us by his word, Spirit and providence? How little they feared the Philistines! [3] How self-denyingly David, when he had this far-fetched dear-bought water, poured it out before the Lord, v. 17. Thus he would honor God and give glory to him. The water purchased at this rate he thought too precious for his own drinking and fit only to be poured out to God as a drink-offering. Bishop Patrick speaks of some who think that David hereby showed that it was not material water he longed for, but the Messiah, who had the water of life, who, he know, should be born at Bethlehem, which the Philistines therefore should not be able to destroy.”
